Weight loss programs and diets: Keeping food diary

Of course you may lose weight by eating less, but the big problem is that as soon as you get back your usual eating habits you will gain it all back.

A diet is something you do until you reach a goal. You can't go back to your old habits that got you to where you needed to lose weight to begin with, unless you assume the risk to get fat again.

Food diaries are the best thing I've found for weight loss.
You may learn new ways of eating, make lifestyle changes and leave that old life behind you. This is the purpose of diary keeping. You will be able to eat every kind of food, but in right portion.

A new study from Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research claims that keeping a food diary can double a person's weight loss. keeping diary

According to researchers
  • The more food diary people keeping, the more weight they lost
  • Those who is keeping daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records
It seems that the simple act of writing down what you eat encourages people to consume fewer calories.

Researchers explain that just the act of scribbling down what we eat on a Post-it note, sending e-mails to us tallying each meal, or sending ourselfself a text message will suffice. This simple writing creates the process of reflecting on what we eat that helps us become aware of our habits, and hopefully change our behavior and lifestyle.

Food Diaries Best Done Right After Meals

If you're new to food diaries, here's advice from a weight management specialist
  • Write down your intake (and calories) using whatever method is easiest -- pen and paper, sticky note, an entry in your computer or PDA, even an e-mail to yourself.
  • Aim to write down your food intake after each eating episode; it's typically more accurate than reconstructing the entire day's intake at once.
  • The task of keeping the diary may help you cut down. Remembering you have to write it down may make you decide you don't need the meal.
