Obese people are more exposed to accidents

A research team has concluded that obesity is not only bad for health and appearance, but also for safety. A recent study at Samsung Life Insurance Lifecare Institute, has revealed that, compared to those who are not, obese people are 73 percent more likely to have an accident, get an operation or require hospitalization.

The Korean institute analyzed insurance money payments to 366,000 subscribers whose data on height and weight were available and highlighted a relation between the subscriber's body mass index (BMI) and payment of the insurance money.

Body Mass Index, or the weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters, is currently used to determine if a person's body weight in healthy. While a reading between 18.5 and 25 is regarded as normal, a BMI reading over 25 indicates that one is obese . Those people under 18.5 are categorized as underweight. The average BMI of Samsung customers was 23.4, while 29 percent of the subscribers were obese. For men, the ratio of obesity was 35.8 percent, while that for women stood at 23.4 percent.

It showed that obese subscribers' rate of medical operations was 12 percent higher. For obese women, it was 22 percent higher. The rate of hospitalization was 30 percent higher ? 53 percent higher for women. It terms of safety, obese people the rate of accidents ? such as falling down ? was 73 percent higher.

The study results showed that obesity not only causes disease, but also accidents as obese people were especially likely to fall down while walking, with the rate of such accidents being 95 percent higher than ordinary people.

However, obesity is not reflected in insurance premiums here. Though the data shows that obese people are more likely to require medical treatment, they are paying the same insurance premiums as non-obese people.
