How to prevent childhood obesity

Last report of American Obesity Association estimates that 15 percent of children and adolescents are obese. Thus, an important question in the today's US is how to prevent childhood obesity has become. Obesity in children is a growing health problem not only in the United States, but worldwide. As a consequence of their obesity, more children are developing illnesses that are more commonly seen in adults. In fact, obesity is a leading health problem for children and conditions such as heart disease, hypertension and diabetes are becoming a health threat for obese and overweight children. In addition to the health problems it can cause, obesity can be associated to social and emotional problems for the young population.

If a child is overweight, then it's a maximum importance for parents to consider steps to prevent them from becoming obese. This lifestyle approach should begin during infancy. Mothers should breast feed their babies for at least the first year of life and wait until they are at least six months old before giving them any solid foods.

The best way to prevent childhood obesity is to teach your children from the childhood years how to eat healthy, well rounded meals. Since families are increasingly relying on fast food restaurants for meals, this is very important, in fact it is a major contributing factor to the rise in childhood obesity. Most of fast food meals are loaded with fats and preservatives that can lead to rapid weight gain and most of the drinks are high in sugar content. The only way to turn this trend is to search for healthier alternatives at the restaurants, or better to take time to prepare nutritious meals at home.

Teach your children how to select the fruits and vegetables. Take them grocery shopping and let them see what you are doing. This will help them get interested nutrition and it will make healthy eating fun for them. Take time to experiment different healthy snacks with your children. Fruit and vegetables between meals can help feel full without taking excess calories. Get feedback from your children and let them help prepare the snacks.

The contemporary tendency for many children is to play video games or watch television. Instead, encourage your children to be physically active, have them play outside. The outdoor games that children often play can help them burn excess calories and fight obesity. Games like hide and seek, tag, kick ball, and hop scotch are fun ways for them to get their daily exercise. Swing sets are also a good opportunity for weight loss in children.
